Costa Rica Beach Resort Embraces Eco-Tourism Removing Straws In Bid To Reduce Plastic Waste

By: Get News

Montezuma – The damage that plastic is causing to the environment is gathering worldwide attention in the media, and countries and venues who rely on the tourist trade are starting to embrace environmentalism across all facets of their business.

The small but picturesque town of Montezuma has led the way with Costa Rica Ecotourism by working with the local residents, small business owners and the tourist board to apply pressure on the local government to drastically increase the amount of recycling taking place in the town. As a consequence, there are now numerous recycling stations throughout the town with separate bins for each different type of recycling.

A new recycling center is in the process of being built, and this will accommodate all of the recycling that is now taking place across the entire area in and around Montezuma.

Costa Rica Tent Resort, Ylang Ylang recently committed to the elimination of all straws within their complex, as in many instances straws are used one time, perhaps for only five minutes and then simply thrown away, adding to landfill, or in the worse case scenario being dumped into the oceans. Ylang Ylang will still provide customers with straws on request, but these straws are biodegradable, and so will not cause any environmental issues.

“As a tourist led economy, it is critical that we look after and maintain our environment both for today and for the future,” said Moraya Iacono of Ylang Ylang beach resorts. As one of the leading Costa Rica family resorts, it was a difficult decision to remove the availability of straws because so many children love to use straws, but as our understanding and knowledge of the damage plastic is causing to the environment has increased, it was an easy decision to make.”

Ylang Ylang Beach Resort is set in lush tropical gardens edging a white sand beach. A secluded romantic getaway for travelers who want a casual resort and love the sounds of the ocean!
